Jail for letting dog starve to death
On 31 May in Lower Hutt District Court, Judge Peter Butler sentenced Mark Brendon Robertson to four months' jail for failing to provide proper and sufficient food to an animal and disqualified Robertson from owning an animal for the rest of his life.
Our animal welfare inspectors found Mark Robertson’s severely emaciated Staffordshire bull terrier lying dead under a flax bush in September 2007. The male dog, named Sid, had resorted to eating grass, sticks and dirt before he died of starvation.
Robertson, 44, repeatedly failed to appear in court, and several warrants were issued for his arrest. He was finally arrested and remanded in custody on 10 May after his mugshot was published in The Dominion Post’s Capital Beat section, and a member of public tipped off police.
Sid the dog lost his life because he was denied the basic necessities of life. This is extremely saddening, but we’re pleased this perpetrator of animal cruelty has finally been brought to justice. To read more about Robertson’s sentencing click here.

A ‘Good Morning’ for Mikey
Mikey came to Wellington SPCA as a stray cat found in Wainuiomata, in December 2010. Last week, Mikey visited our friends at the Good Morning show.
|
Being deaf, Mikey has an extremely loud meow. Two special people heard Mikey’s plea and immediately contacted our Newtown Centre to enquire about adopting him. The next day, Mikey’s new mum and dad were waiting to adopt him even before our doors opened! Mikey is now happily settled into his new home with three other white, deaf cats and a German Shepherd! |
 |
Thank you to all our donors for giving Mikey a second chance at life
